Update - 5th April 2005
The contruction of the lake
and facilities is nearing completion, with the remaining 6 platforms to
be installed, and the bridge linking the two ends of the upper path left
to do. As always we could use help from any willing club members, so please
feel free to contact me for dates and times of working parties.
The commitee has taken the
decision that over the next few weeks a sample stocking of small (4-6inches)
carp. This will confirm whether the lake can support the fish, as well
as giving anglers something to target on the new lake. We are hoping that
an angling presence at the water will deter the dogs and horses from entering
the lake damaging the vegitation and lake bed.
An informative article for
the residents of Ivybridge has been published in the Ivybridge Gazzette
explaining the history of the project. Please click on the image below

Would-be
anglers and established enthusiasts in Ivybridge near Plymouth are being
given a big sporting boost with the creation of a coarse fishing lake in the
town. Work has just started on the £60,000 project to create the lake at
Filham Park in Ivybridge.
The
scheme has come about through a partnership between the Environment Agency,
the Plymouth and District Coarse Angling Club and Ivybridge Town Council.
The Environment Agency’s contribution is being funded with money from the
national rod licence scheme. A grant has also been given by Living Spaces,
which is funded by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister and managed by
Groundwork. Further funding has been obtained from Peoples Places.
The
two-acre lake will take around six weeks to build, and is being created by a
specialist lakes contractor, House Bros and Bailey Ltd. During the winter,
fishing platforms will be built and the lake will be stocked with plants.
Lesley
Newport from the Environment Agency said: "This lake will be an excellent
facility for all the community, and we hope will encourage many new anglers
to take up the sport and learn more about their natural environment. It is
unusual for new public lakes to be created these days, and it is a credit to
all the partners involved that this has come about."
Lesley
Hughes responded on behalf of Ivybridge Town Council by welcoming the
investment by the Environment Agency and the Fishing Club in Filham Park and
added "This has been an excellent example of partnership working and the
town will have a superb facility to enjoy. The design of the lake, which was
part of the Filham Park Masterplan developed by Scott Wilson, will ensure
that it will soon look part of the natural environment, attracting wildlife
to the area".
Membership of Plymouth and District Coarse Angling Club is open to anyone or
day tickets for fishing will be available for anyone with a rod licence
wanting to use the lake once it is stocked with fish and opened next year.
Parents
are warned to keep their children away from the construction work during the
school holidays for obvious reasons of safety.
**There
will be an opportunity for the press to take pictures of the construction
phase on Thursday 5 August at 1000 am at Filham Park.**

The story so far
At this moment in time are drawings and ideas are sitting in Ivybridge
town council planning department office awaiting there approval , although
Ivybridge town council own the lake site it however sits in Ugburough
parish so the plans have to be passed by the parish council so they don't
feel left out. With luck by mid April we should have the relevant planning
permission, by that time we should have are lease drawn up, once that has
been signed and sealed we can start digging. We have a contractor rearing
to go they recon on digging it in about 4 weeks. Then there will be the
path laying the council want a tarmac path around the lake.
The lake will cover approximately 2 ½ acres of land, and
will have 5 to 6 islands; there will also be gravel bars, sunken islands,
and deep hollows. Hopefully every peg will have a feature to fish too. The
lake has been designed for easy access for the disabled angler.
One of the conditions Ivybridge have stated is that the
lake is open to anyone to fish so it will become a day ticket water, I
think the tickets will be sold from, Clives Tackle & Bait, Manadon Angling
and Ivybridge information centre. The price of a day ticket will be £5
approximately.
The drawing is a design from the E A we would like your
comments what do you want as regards to features, islands ECT. The next
step is to have test holes dug this is being done in the first week of
June after this has been done its get your tenders in
